Step 1. Microchip Identification (ISO 11784/11785 Standard)

Before initiating any vaccinations or documentation, your pet must be microchipped with a 15-digit ISO-compliant microchip. This chip should be scannable at all international checkpoints. It serves as your pet’s digital ID, linking all medical records and confirming identity at Nepal’s point of entry.

Step 2. Rabies Vaccination Certificate

Rabies vaccination is mandatory for all dogs and cats entering Nepal. The vaccine must be administered at least 30 days prior to travel and not older than 12 months at the time of entry. Ensure that the rabies vaccine is given after microchipping to maintain compliance with import laws.

Your vet must provide a signed and stamped rabies certificate, which should include:

• Pet’s details (species, breed, age)

• Microchip number

• Vaccine manufacturer, batch number

• Date of vaccination and expiration

Step 3. Core Vaccinations for Dogs and Cats

Besides rabies, Nepal also requires your pet to be fully vaccinated against core diseases to ensure they are protected and pose no health threat to native animals.

• Dogs should be vaccinated for:

  • Distemper

  • Hepatitis (Adenovirus)

  • Parvovirus

  • Leptospirosis

  • Parainfluenza

• Cats should be vaccinated for:

  • Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis

  • Calicivirus

  • Panleukopenia

  • Feline Leukemia (recommended)

These vaccines should be given according to your home country’s vet protocol and documented in the pet’s health certificate.

Step 4. Import Permit (Not Mandatory for Personal Pets)

As of current regulations, Nepal does not require an import permit for personal pet dogs or cats, provided all health documentation is complete and verifiable. However, commercial imports, exotic species, or large quantities of pets may need special clearance from the Department of Livestock Services.

Step 5. Entry via Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu)

Pets must enter Nepal through Tribhuvan International Airport (Kathmandu). Upon arrival, quarantine officers may inspect documents and conduct a brief health check. There is typically no mandatory quarantine if all documents are in order and the pet appears healthy.
