Step-by-Step Guide to Relocating Pets to Croatia
Here’s what you can expect when exporting your pet from India to Croatia

Step 1: Microchip Implantation (ISO 11784/11785 Compliant)
The very first step in preparing your pet for travel to Croatia is microchipping. Your dog or cat must be implanted with a 15-digit ISO-compliant microchip before any vaccinations are administered. This microchip is the official identification tool used by Croatian (and EU) authorities to match your pet with its medical records.
Step 2: Rabies Vaccination (Post-Microchip Only)
Your pet must receive a rabies vaccine after the microchip is implanted, even if vaccinated before. The rabies vaccination must be:
-
Administered at least 21 days before travel
-
Not older than 12 months
-
Inactivated (killed-virus) vaccine, not a live or multi-year vaccine
The rabies certificate must include vaccine batch number, manufacturer, and vet’s stamp.
Step 3: EU Health Certificate
A certified veterinarian must issue an EU-compliant health certificate not more than 10 days before entry. It must be endorsed by the official authority in India (AQCS/DAHD).
Step 4: Parasite Treatment (Recommended for Dogs)
Although not mandatory in all cases, most airlines and some EU regulations recommend treatment for:
-
Internal parasites (especially tapeworm – Echinococcus multilocularis)
-
External parasites like ticks and fleas
The treatment should be done between 1–5 days before travel, and the details should be recorded in the health certificate.
Step 5: Approved Entry Points into Croatia
Your pet must enter Croatia through an authorized Border Inspection Post (BIP) or EU-designated port of entry. Popular arrival points include:
-
Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport
-
Dubrovnik Airport
-
Split Airport
Veterinary officials may inspect your pet’s documents and microchip upon arrival. If all documents are in order, there is no mandatory quarantine.
Step 6: EU Pet Passport (for Future Travel)
Once in Croatia, your pet becomes eligible for an EU Pet Passport, which makes travel across other EU countries much easier. This is issued by a local Croatian vet and includes updated vaccination records and microchip details.
