Pet Relocation Guide: Step-by-Step Process for Moving Pets out of India
TRANSPORTING PETS – GENERAL GUIDELINES
STEP 1: Initiate the process at least 4-8 months before the planned pet movement date
STEP 2: Measure your pet and acquire an IATA-specified travel crate. Opt for renowned brands like Petmate, Varipet, or SkyKennel for their sturdiness and safety and can be bought HERE
Note: IATA Does Not Endorse Pet Crate Brands - Caution Against "IATA APPROVED" Claims
Be cautious of sellers promoting “IATA APPROVED” crates, as IATA does not officially endorse specific brands. Such claims may be marketing tactics, signaling a lack of understanding of pet travel requirements. Rely on reliable sources and seek guidance from experienced pet travel professionals
STEP 3: Familiarize your pet with the travel crate using insights from our Crate Training information page. Starting early is crucial, especially for pets accustomed to open spaces.
STEP 4: Have a microchip inserted before Rabies vaccination, ensuring it complies with ISO 11784/785 standards (15 digits).
STEP 5 :If not done already, spay/neuter your pet, a practice highly recommended for enhanced acceptance in dog parks, pet boarding, and various pet-friendly facilities.
STEP 6: Ensure vaccinations are up to date, including Rabies, DHLPPi (for dogs), and FRCP (for cats). Also, undertake deworming and anti-tick/flea treatments. Bordetella and Corona are recommended for added protection during travel
STEP 7: If needed, conduct Antibody Titration tests, especially the Rabies Titer Test, at least 30 days after Rabies vaccination. Some countries may require additional tests; consult your Pet Relocator.
STEP 8: Send the blood sample to an EU or OIE approved laboratory in India, adhering to destination country regulations.
STEP 9: Ensure the test result meets the destination country's requirement (usually >=0.5 IU/ml).
STEP 10: Apply for an Import Permit and/or block Quarantine space with the Animal Quarantine station of the destination country if necessary.
STEP 11: Finalize the type of relocation: In-Cabin/Accompanied Baggage, Manifest Cargo, or a Premium Option with a Pet Relocation Specialist.
STEP 12: Book space with airlines or consult with a Pet Relocator, considering factors like Age of your pet, breed, crate size, travel time, layovers, and weather conditions.
